While an employee handbook might allow people to take time off for mental health reasons, if the company culture frowns upon it, employees may internalize the notion that mental health is not as important as physical health.

Some women may change career paths either from one industry to another or with a different role in the same industry — something that can be challenging in a down market, Weiss said.
